Agrigento has been named the Italian Capital of Culture 2025. This ancient city in Sicily was proclaimed during a ceremony held in Rome at the Ministry of Culture. The city was chosen from a pool of ten candidate cities, including Aosta, Assisi, Asti, Bagnoregio, Monte Sant’Angelo, Orvieto, Pescina, Roccasecca, and Spoleto.

During the ceremony, the Minister of Culture highlighted Italy’s rich cultural heritage, stating that “history has kissed us in this, giving us a unicum of different civilizations that have settled on our territory.” Agrigento is a perfect example of this cultural richness. Founded in the sixth century BC, it rose to prominence in the fifth century BC with the rise of the polis of Akragas.

Agrigento’s cultural history is evident in its Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is home to an expanse of Doric temples of the ancient Greek city, including the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in the world. The city has been known as the City of Temples and Agrigento Capital of Culture 2025 due to the historical significance and beauty of the temples.

In addition to being named Capital of Culture, Agrigento will also host a Capital of Contemporary Art from next year, where municipalities can apply every year to host works of contemporary art.

Visitors to Agrigento can explore the rich cultural history of the city while enjoying its natural beauty. The city’s location, which saw the rise of many ancient peoples, including indigenous people with commercial relations with the Aegean and Mycenaean, make it a unique destination.
