To experience Sicily at a comfortable pace for the first time, we recommend between 12 and 15 days. This allows time to explore different regions of the island, enjoy cultural and culinary experiences, and travel without rushing. If time permits, 5/6 weeks will be enough to visit the whole region, including some islands.

That said, Sicily can be visited in 5–6 days, but it’s best to focus on one specific area of this big island. Shorter trips work best with well-planned itineraries that minimize travel time and highlight a specific region, such as eastern or western Sicily. The roads are not great, so going from east to west or from north to south can take several hours to drive and this needs to be considered when planning a short trip.

Public transportation connects major cities, but it can be limited and inconsistent, so it is generally not reliable for travelers. Private transportation is recommended. Self-driving is also an option, provided you have experience driving in heavy traffic and in busy places akin to Paris, Rome or Naples.

The whole of Sicily is authentic due to its size and comparatively little tourism. Even in the major cities, like Palermo, Catania and Siracusa, most people you meet will be Sicilians. Only Taormina is crowded during the high season months (May, June, July and September) due to tourism.

Due to its position in the south, Sicily is a wonderful location to visit all year round, as winters are mild and the Sun shines most of the time. Unlike other popular places in Italy, like the Cinque Terre, Positano and Portofino, which are ‘open for tourism’ only a few months of the year (April to October), Sicily never closes since all the locations, including Taormina, are busy 12 months a year with local people.

Sicily’s main airports are Catania and Palermo, but there are not many direct flights from the U.S. Our recommendation is always to book airfare in and out of Rome Fiumicino Airport (one of the biggest airports in southern Europe), and we will take care of the internal connections for you.

English is commonly spoken in major cities and tourist areas. In smaller towns and rural areas, English may be limited, which is why many travelers appreciate having local guides or personalized travel support.
