Saint Joseph’s Festival “Festa San Giuseppe” is celebrated across Sicily on March 19 and blends faith, food, and family tradition. In many towns, elaborate altars (known as tavolate) are created in honor of Saint Joseph, decorated with candles, flowers, and symbolic breads shaped into crosses, staffs, and crowns.

In Sicily, Saint Joseph is invoked as a protector during times of famine and hardship. According to local tradition, communities prayed to Saint Joseph during periods of drought. When rain finally came and crops survived, people prepared large altars of bread and food in thanksgiving — a custom that evolved into today’s tavolate di San Giuseppe.
