Saint Rosalia’s Festival “Festa di Santa Rosalia” is one of the most important celebrations in Palermo, held each year from July 10–15 in honor of the city’s beloved patron saint. Known locally as “U Festinu,” the festival combines religious devotion with theatrical processions, music, fireworks, and lively street celebrations that fill Palermo’s historic centre.
According to tradition, Saint Rosalia saved Palermo from a devastating plague in 1624. After the saint reportedly appeared in a vision and revealed the location of her remains on Monte Pellegrino, her relics were carried in procession through the city. Soon after, the plague subsided. In gratitude, Palermo established an annual festival in her honor, and she has been venerated as the city’s protector ever since.
